New Year's Eve at the Shoe Shop!

My last big show of 2009 was at The Economy Shoe Shop for New Year's Eve. I brought in 2010 with a bang by live painting at one of the most popular downtown spots in Halifax! Here's the resulting work!:

On Stage: Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers

Follow my live painted works as they are created on my Art Blog!!

My name is Sharon Hodgson, and I am a designer/painter in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I love exploring painting as a subtle performance art. sharon hodgsonI show up at various events in and around Halifax and paint events/evenings/places.

I seek to create works of art that captivate the movements, colours and vibe of these events.

I start painting a piece when I arrive, and finish by the end of the evening.
The completed piece is available for sale!

I wasn't sure I could do this whole painting-in-public thing the first time I got the notion to try it. It's not that I doubt my painting abilities... it's more the natural inclination of the artist to be more of a hermit than a performer. I even tried stand-up comedy a few times. How did that go? Honestly... I found it to be a little bit daunting. Then again, someone in the audience randomly caught fire while I was on stage doing my comedic set the last time I tried it. That might have something to do with it.

Has anyone caught fire while I have been painting live at events?
No, not yet! So far so good!

So What is This About?

              I wish to...
            • Paint life as it happens.
            • Capture life in motion.
            • Explore art as a performance.
            • Use bold, bright colours.
            • Meet more artists.
            • Paint more events.

I paint motion and the emotions that have coloured my perceptions of motion. Over the years, this has made me strive to appreciate living in the moment of Now more and more. I wish to pay attention to what is happening immediately around me. I paint live at events. I paint at bars and other places where you would never expect to see an artist. I've painted in churches and I have painted at raves.

I love painting spoken word gatherings. I am inspired by the words.

I enjoy the challenge of producing something on the spot. Sometimes I feel as though I am doing the same thing over and over again, but other times I feel as though each event is different... with a different vibe... and that comes out in the work. The more I paint live, the better I get at it... the more comfortable I feel with it. I have spoken to a few live painters in other cities... most of them paint bands or festivals. I've painted in a wide range of events. I think live painting could potentially be a painting genre if more artists embraced it personally. I feel it encourages an atmosphere of sharing between artist and audience rather than producing the work in secret.

I can make art easily, and I don't mind if people watch the process and take an interest in what I'm making. I can produce a painting in an hour, but usually I paint for 2-3 hrs... and the painting almost always sells to someone at the show that night. There's something nostalgic to being at an event that was captured in a work of art, I think. It makes art more accessible because it applies to something that is near and dear to someone who was there. I have an obsession with painting movement and somehow involving the component of "time" in the work... either to show a series of motions and give the viewer the sense that the gestalted shapeforms on the canvas a lead-through a small set of actions, eyes and lips to express emotions... and reinforce my colours as having emotive purpose.

Though I do participate in "traditional" galleries and shows from time to time, I am more interested in the notion of bringing art to the common man or woman in the street who might not even venture into a gallery. I want to put art in front of people who might not otherwise consider it. It makes contemporary art more accessible... and it makes my work more familiar. I meet people randomly and hear about events without even searching because I'm out there. My motions as an artist are seen by others while I paint the motions of others as art. So far, it's been most rewarding.
